SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea formally restored Japan to its list of countries it gives preferential treatment in trade on Monday, three years after the neighbors downgraded each other’s trade status amid a diplomatic row fueled by historical grievances. In announcing the move through a government gazette, South Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy also said Seoul will further restrict technology and industrial exports to Russia and its ally Belarus to support the U.S.-led pressure campaign against Moscow over the war in Ukraine. After years of friction, Seoul and Tokyo are working to repair relations as they tighten their three-way security cooperation with Washington to counter the threat posed by North Korea. Pyongyang has used the distractions caused by the war to accelerate testing of nuclear-capable missiles. South Korean officials expect Tokyo to restore Seoul as a favored trade partner too, but expect that step to take more time based on the procedures to re...Australia plans major overhaul of defenses as China rises

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — Australia needs to spend more money on defense, make its own munitions and develop the ability to strike longer-range targets as China’s military buildup challenges regional security, according to a government-commissioned review released Monday. The Defense Strategic Review supports the so-called AUKUS partnership between Australia, United States and Britain, who in March announced an agreement to create an Australian fleet of eight submarines powered by U.S. nuclear technology.Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said his government commissioned the review to assess whether Australia had the necessary defense capability, posture and preparedness to defend itself in the current strategic environment.“We support the strategic direction and key findings set out in the review, which will strengthen our national security and ensure our readiness for future challenges,” Albanese said in a statement. The public version of the classified review recommended Austra...A ‘Walk for One More Heartbeat’ event raises nearly $49,000

The Athletics and Giants completed what amounted to a swap of local players no longer in their plans Sunday when left-handed pitcher Sam Long was sent to Oakland.Earlier this week, the A’s designated Cal Stevenson for assignment and then sent him to the Giants for cash considerations. Long was DFA’d after the Stevenson deal, and arrives with the same “cash considerations” designation. It’s basically a swap of of players with Northern California ties, as Long attended Del Campo High in Sacramento County before going to Sacramento State and Stevenson played at Kennedy-Fremont before playing at Chabot College, Arizona and Nevada.Long, 26, pitched in 40 games for the Giants in 2021 and 2022 with a 3-4 record, 4.55 earned run average. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Memphis agitator Dillon Brooks believes his image as an NBA villain contributed to the decision to eject him from Game 3 of the Grizzlies’ playoff series with the Los Angeles Lakers after he struck LeBron James in the groin.Brooks said Sunday his flagrant foul 2 was an accident, and he believes his reputation in the media and among the basketball public were factors in his ejection from the third quarter of Memphis’ 111-101 loss Saturday night.“The media making me a villain, the fans making me a villain and then that just creates a whole different persona on me,” Brooks told reporters after the Grizzlies’ off-day shootaround at USC’s Galen Center.Brooks struck James just 17 seconds into the second half, and he was ejected after a brief video review. Democrats should stop demagoguing the “gun” issue on “how” people are dying and focus instead on “why” people are dying. When guns are involved, there is a 84% homicide rate for Black youth under the age of 18, according to a recent Pew Research Center study. The use of guns for suicides among the same group is only 9%.Conversely, for white youth under the age of 18, 66% die from guns in suicides, while homicides involving guns represent only 24%.Suicides and homicides both represent a “lack of hope.” Mental illness, resulting in not wanting to live anymore, is about having no hope, and gang-related drug crimes in a struggle for economic survival is also due to no hope in the American Dream.Could the media’s proliferation of stories on mass shootings be a reason we are seeing more and more mass shootings? It could be a bona fide unintended consequence. For example, in July 1964 in Harlem, New York we had our first major race riot. It was covered extensively by every news network. Even...Latest news
