Mike Murnane, undefeated Billerica rally past Methuen METHUEN — Mike Murnane made an emphatic return to the field.Murnane, who was sidelined the first five weeks of the season with a broken collarbone, scored the go-ahead touchdown as part of a fourth quarter that saw him rush for 63 yards as Billerica remained undefeated with a 23-13 road win over Methuen over Friday night at Nicholson Stadium.Billerica (6-0) has now beaten Central Catholic, Tewksbury and Methuen on the road this season.“Mike Murnane makes all the difference in the world,” Billerica coach Duane Sigsbury said. “This team is special. We have kids that can play. Our kids put in an absolutely unbelievable effort.”All offseason and summer, Murnane was set to be Billerica’s starting quarterback. A broken collarbone forced Steven Gentile into the job and with Gentile’s success so far this season a move was not in the cards. As a result, Murnane has slid into a role as a hybrid wide receiver and running back, where he is poised to be a forc...

King Philip defense carries the day in 13-7 win over Foxboro FOXBORO — The brand of football King Philip plays generally does not build excitement. The Warriors suffocate opponents on defense, and bludgeon them in the running game.Using that successful formula again, KP earned a 13-7 win Friday night at Foxboro in a Hockomock League crossover.KP improves to 6-0, while Foxboro took its first loss at 5-1. The victory also prevented Foxboro coach Jack Martinelli from winning his 300th game for at least a week.“It’s tough to make a living just lining up and pounding straight ahead when everybody knows what you’re going to do,” King Philip coach Brian Lee said. “At the same time, you’re working a little clock trying to keep them off the field. We really missed some big opportunities. Missed a field goal, (didn’t convert a) fourth and 1. We missed them, they stopped us. Those things kept them in the game, fighting until the end like they always do.“It’s always a battle over here. Did I expect a b...

High school football: Hudson rolls New Richmond 35-13, wins Big Rivers title NEW RICHMOND, Wis. — Five plays and about three minutes of game time was all it took for New Richmond’s perfect record this season to go by the wayside.Instead, rival Hudson took advantage of a couple of critical Tiger turnovers in a 35-13 win in a Big Rivers Conference championship tilt between two of the top teams in Western Wisconsin on Friday night at New Richmond High School. Both teams entered the night 6-0 in Big Rivers play. While explosive, high-scoring offenses have been the story for each club all season, it was the defenses that showed up early on a rainy, windy night. But after a scoreless first quarter, where each defense owned the line of scrimmage, Hudson secured a pair of turnovers and turned them into 15 quick points.Just over a minute into the second quarter, Hudson forced a New Richmond fumble and took over at the Tiger 44-yard line. On the very next play, junior receiver Tyler Lassard busted free on a post route and hauled in a perfect pass from senior quarterback...

Women’s hockey: Abbey Murphy’s hat trick leads Gophers’ rout of St. Thomas at Xcel Energy Center After losing 11 players to graduation, Minnesota women’s hockey coach Brad Frost considers his team a work in progress. Despite being ranked fourth in the country, the Gophers have a lot of goals that need to be replaced if they are going to make what has become an annual run at a national title.Friday afternoon at the Xcel Energy Center, Abbey Murphy provided a not-too-subtle reminder that not all of the Gophers’ world-class talent has moved on.Murphy, a member of the 2022 U.S. Olympic team who is coming off a 29-goal season, collected a hat trick as the Gophers pounded St. Thomas 8-0 in the WCHA opener for both teams. The redshirt junior right winger from Evergreen Park, Ill., has scored six goals in three games to help the Gophers start the season 3-0.The Gophers are counting on Murphy to raise the bar even higher in an already stellar career, and the early returns suggest she is prepared to do just that.“She’s just kind of taken on the load more significantly as she has in the p...
