Open Society Foundations pledge €100 million to start new Roma foundation

Open Society Foundations said Tuesday that it will spin off its support for Europe’s Roma communities into a new foundation and pledged €100 million, around $107 million, for that work. The Roma Foundation for Europe, which will be independent of OSF, launches in January and will be based in Brussels, said the foundations. Zeljko Jovanovic, director of OSF’s Roma Initiatives Office, will lead the new foundation. “This is a true European project because we are the biggest European minority, the most neglected and disadvantaged,” Jovanovic told The Associated Press, referring to the Roma community. “So when you support the most disadvantaged, you support the development of the whole society.”An estimated 10 to 12 million Roma people live in Europe, with around 6 million living in the European Union, making them the continent’s largest ethnic minority. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Julio Urías was arrested on a felony charge of corporal injury on a spouse or cohabitant, a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman said Tuesday.Urías did not travel with the Dodgers to Miami, where they open a three-game series against the Marlins on Tuesday night. He was scheduled to make his next start Thursday.Urías was arrested late Sunday night by Department of Public Safety officers in Exposition Park, south of downtown Los Angeles. DENVER (KDVR) -- A teacher at Cherry Creek High School, who is also a coach, has been placed on leave after an alleged incident involving criminal obscenity, the Greenwood Village Police Department said Tuesday.The identity of the teacher has not been released. Police say there is no threat to the community.The investigation is active and ongoing into the alleged incident and other crimes which could be associated, police said.Police say the district notified the department on August 23 and that the district is cooperating with the investigation. WEST MIAMI, Fla. (WSVN) – A 58-year-old West Miami man is facing charges of first-degree arson and criminal mischief after allegedly setting his own trailer on fire. According to an arrest form, just before 1:45 a.m., Monday, a witness observed a trailer in the Westhaven Trailer Park community, located at 6020 SW 8 Street, Lot A121, engulfed in flames and immediately called 911. While outside, the witness noticed Roberto Angel Cardenosa lighting the contents of a large metal dumpster on fire before disappearing from sight. A search was underway in Boxboro Tuesday afternoon for a man “who may be connected to a potential assault,” officials said. Catamount Road, as well as the Lodge at Ames Pond apartment complex, have been without running water since Saturday.
