‘Mindboggling’: Will Monday’s big snow tally break a 1952 record in the Sierra Nevada?

California water officials were set to trek up to Echo Summit south of Lake Tahoe on Monday for a highly anticipated annual snowpack measurement — and this year, it could be like a scene out of the 1975 movie “Jaws.”They’ll — probably — need a bigger ruler. The results could topple a record set more than half a century ago.A colossal pounding of snowfall this winter in the Sierra Nevada has produced incredible precipitation numbers for the region, wiped away drought conditions across most of the state and drawn out the ski season until the summertime for some Tahoe resorts. The nonstop slashing of storms has also wrought destruction in some parts of the Bay Area, where high winds and heavy rain have toppled trees and caused hundreds of millions of dollars in damage. But for those keeping a close eye on the white fluffy stuff coming down from the sky this winter — the state says snowpack is at 236% of normal this time of year — the weathe...Robert, Moncada power White Sox past Astros 6-3

HOUSTON (AP) — Luis Robert Jr. and Yoán Moncada homered, Mike Clevinger threw five shutout innings and the Chicago White Sox defeated the Houston Astros 6-3 on Sunday.Robert hit a solo home run in the fifth and made a spectacular sliding catch on the left-center warning tack in the ninth to rob Kyle Tucker of extra bases. Moncada hit a two-run homer in the ninth as Chicago gained a four-game split of the opening series.Down 6-1, Houston closed in the ninth on RBI singles by José Abreu and David Hensley off Reynaldo López. New White Sox manager Pedro Grifol came onto the field attempting to make a mound visit, but umpires conferenced and he was turned back because Chicago had reached its limit.Astros manager Dusty Baker spoke with umpire Bill Miller, apparently asking why the White Sox weren’t being penalized for trying to make too many mound trips.Lopez stepped off the rubber with Chas McCormick at the plate and a 1-2 count and was charged a balk for a third disengagement in v...Gallo blasts 2 homers, Twins sweep Royals with 7-4 win

KANSAS CITY, MO. (AP) — Joey Gallo hit two home runs, Joe Ryan gave up one run over six innings and the Minnesota Twins completed a sweep of the Kansas City Royals with a 7-4 victory on Sunday.Gallo hit his first home run of the game in the sixth inning and in the next frame belted a three-run blast over the right field bullpen to extend the Twins’ lead to 6-1. It was his 16th career multi-homer game.“Obviously, you want to start off well and it’s really early, but I wanted to help my team and I felt like I wasn’t contributing as much as I wanted to the first couple of games, but it’s good to have a good day today,” Gallo said. “We’ve been working a lot and even worked after the game for like 30 to 45 minutes yesterday with all the hitting coaches. I’ve been feeling pretty good, so hopeful keep that going.”After failing to score in the first two games of the season, the Royals finally got a run in the second inning on Edward Olivares’ homer....El gobierno de Italia busca penalizar el uso de palabras en inglés

ROME (AP) — If this was just the antipasto, Napoli should be concerned about what AC Milan will serve up for the main course. In the first of three matchups between Milan and Napoli this month, the defending Serie A champion routed this season’s runaway leader 4-0 on Sunday ahead of two more clashes in the Champions League quarterfinals.Rafael Leão scored twice and Brahim Diaz set up one goal and scored another to hand Napoli its heaviest defeat of what otherwise has been an extraordinary season.“We’re happy with the performance but it’s just one game,” Milan coach Stefano Pioli said. “Tonight’s result has nothing to do with the Champions League games, because that’s a different competition. That will be a very balanced contest.”Napoli’s only other losses in the Italian league this season both came by scores of 1-0, to Inter Milan in January and to Lazio a month ago.Napoli was also beaten 2-0 by Liverpool in the final match of the Champions League group phase but that loss came after...El Paso County orders mandatory evacuation for wildland fire

BOSTON (AP) — The Red Sox know scoring nine runs in every game is satisfying — though not sustainable.“We’re probably not going to average nine runs a game all year long,” Kiké Hernández said after collecting two of the team’s 14 hits in a 9-5 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday. “But I do believe that’s what we’re capable of.”Coming off a last-place finish in 2022 and predicted to finish at the bottom of the AL East again this season, the Red Sox opened by beating Baltimore two out of three — scoring nine runs in each game. They are the third team in baseball history to score at least nine in three straight games to start a season, joining Cincinnati’s 1976 Big Red Machine and the ’78 Milwaukee Brewers known as “Bambi’s Bombers.”One day after amassing four hits, including a walk-off homer, Adam Duvall had three more hits — two doubles and a two-run single to break a fifth-inning tie. The free agent outfielder collected his sixth extra-base hit of the seas...Cape Cod Canal temporarily closed as Right Whales move through
