‘He is an absolute hero’: 12-year-old boy pulls man from Wellington pool, administers CPR WELLINGTON, Fla. (WSVN) — A brave Palm Beach County boy jumped into action when someone close to him suffered a medical emergency in a swimming pool.Surveillance video captured 12-year-old Austen MacMillan as he pulled behavioral therapist Jason Piquette up from the bottom of his family’s pool in Wellington.Just as MacMillan turned to get help, Piquette slipped under the water. The seventh grader went in the pool to make the save.“I pulled him out of the water, and then I pulled him to that shore over there,” said the boy.When he realized Piquette wasn’t breathing, MacMillan said he knew what to do.“I gave him CPR,” he said as he mimicked compressions.When asked where he learned to do that, the 12-year-old replied, “I just saw it on TV.”MacMillan’s technique is exactly what is taught in CPR courses.The security footage showed MacMillan yelling for help as he began compressions.“I heard him yelling in a frantic way tha...

Hurricane Lee unleashes heavy swell on northern Caribbean as it restrengthens over open waters SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Hurricane Lee barreled over open waters Sunday night just northeast of the Caribbean, unleashing heavy swell on several islands as it regained some strength and expanded in size.The Category 3 storm is not forecast to make landfall and is expected to stay over open waters through Friday. Late Sunday, it was centered about 310 miles (500 kilometers) north of the northern Leeward Islands. Its maximum sustained winds were clocked at 120 mph (195 kph) and it was moving northwest at 8 mph (13 kph).Last week, Lee strengthened from a Category 1 storm to a Category 5 storm in just one day. “We had the perfection conditions for a hurricane: warm waters and hardly any wind shear,” said Lee Ingles, a forecaster with the National Weather Service in San Juan.By Saturday night, it had slowed to a Category 2 hurricane, but began restrengthening Sunday. Hyundai offers security software for local car owners to combat rampant thefts JENNINGS, Mo. – Officials from car manufacturer Hyundai were in Jennings this weekend to offer a free anti-theft software installation for vehicle owners.Thieves have targeted Hyundai cars in recent years because of ongoing security issues that make them easy to steal.St. Louis City reported nearly 2,500 car thefts in 2022. In the first four months of 2023, the number of car thefts skyrocketed to nearly 4,400. Between Hyundai and Kia vehicles, thefts rose approximately 673% in that timeframe.Similar circumstances exist in St. Louis County. Last year, there were nearly 3,300 car break-ins in the county. Thus far in 2023, there have been almost 1,700, more than half of which are Hyundai and Kia.“What the police tell us is they have a high theft rate, and they want help,” David VandeLinde, vice president of after-sales for Hyundai Motor America, said. Pepperdine University's 'Waves of Flags' display returns to honor victims of 9/11 Ahead of the 22 anniversary of 9/11, Pepperdine University's “Waves of Flags" display has returned to the campus.  Each of the nearly 3,000 American flags in Alumni Park, along Pacific Coast Highway and Malibu Canyon Road, represent the life of an innocent victim taken during the 2001 terrorist attack, with a national flag for each foreign country that lost one of its citizens that tragic day.  The Waves of Flags display seen here in Alumni Park on the campus of Pepperdine University. Actor and producer Chris Pratt will speak at the 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony, along with university president Jim Gash and director of Student Veteran Affairs Eric Leshinsky.  “Attendees are invited to walk through the Waves of Flags display prior to or following the ceremony to pay tribute to the lives lost with prayer and reflection,” the university’s website said.  The remembrance ceremony is scheduled for Sept. 11, from 9-10 a.m. Registration is required to attend the event.  ...
