We are very happy. We each have two adult children. His 42-year-old son, “Tony,” recently divorced with a preschooler, has always had issues.Last Father’s Day, my husband’s children and grandchildren gathered at our house.Tony, who has a drinking problem, started drinking beer early.I was busy attending to the group and wasn’t really paying attention to the amount he was consuming. (Plus, he’s a grown man; I’m not responsible for him.)Later, Tony decided that he and his child would spend the night at our house.I fed, bathed, and put the child to bed, still not realizing that he was continuing to drink.I went to bed, but was awakened by Tony and my husband arguing loudly. I told them both to go to bed.My husband walked into our bedroom and Tony followed. Then suddenly, he punched his father with a closed fist, knocking him over!He immediately ran out and punched a huge hole in our living room wal...

Commission clears acquisition of Weltec by DWS and MunichRe The European Commission has approved, under the EU Merger Regulation, the acquisition of joint control of Weltec Holding GmbH (‘Weltec') of Germany by DWS Alternatives Global Limited (‘DWS') of the UK and Münchener Rückversicherungs-Gesellschaft Aktiengesellschaft in München (‘MunichRe') of Germany. The transaction relates primarily to the operation of biogas and biomethane plants and the trading of its outputs, including electricity, heat and fertiliser in Germany. The Commission concluded that the notified transaction would not raise competition concerns, given the limited impact in the European Economic Area and the companies' limited combined market position resulting from the proposed transaction. The notified transaction was examined under the simplified merger review procedure.More information is available on the Commission's competition website, in the public case register under the case number M.11265.

Russell: Careers over kids? A lot of adults look at parenthood the wrong way

Russell: Careers over kids? A lot of adults look at parenthood the wrong way Motherhood, as almost any mother will tell you, is one of the hardest things women do. Especially because she’s rarely doing just that. Most women are juggling it all: Careers, intimate relationships, friendships, health, home, and then, of course, the kids. This could be part of the reason why a new Pew Research report, “Public Has Mixed Views on the Modern American Family,” showed that men and women are choosing their careers over having children. But it’s not the whole picture, and it’s too bad for society and for potential parents. Only about 26% think having kids is an essential part of fulfillment and just 23% think being married remains part of a key component of happiness. Americans now think high job satisfaction and close friendships are more fulfilling than being married or being a mom or dad. In fact, over 70% of people said having a career will help them achieve life fulfillment. This is unfortunate. There’s two things at play here, although both may...

Bridge: Oct. 17, 2023 On a Monday, an environmental advocacy group sent out a press notice that read “Save the whales. Tomorrow may be too late.” The notice was marked, “For release Tuesday.”Today’s West led the ten of spades against 3NT, and South won in dummy and let the ten of clubs ride. He hoped for five clubs, two spades, two hearts and at least one diamond. But when West took the king and led another spade, South had only eight tricks, and when East got in with the ace of diamonds, the defense ran the spades for down one.ACE APPEARSSouth mistimed. At Trick Two, dummy should lead a low diamond. When East’s ace appears, South can win four diamonds, two spades, two hearts and one club.Suppose East played a low diamond. If South’s king held, he could switch to clubs. If instead South’s king lost to West, South could win the spade return and take the queen of diamonds; if the jack fell, he would be home. If both defenders played low diamonds, South could ...
