Initial observations from the CU Buffs’ 48-41 loss to the USC Trojans in head coach Deion Sanders’ first Pac-12 home game at Folsom Field on Saturday.Quick game: If it wasn’t clear after the first CU drive, it was abundantly so after the second. These coaches did not trust the Buffs offensive line early on. Nearly every Shedeur Sanders drop-back was two or three steps. Quick outs. Short button-hooks. Screens. And with good reason. This USC pass rush gets home on good offensive lines, and the Buffs have been shaky up front. The two times Sanders did drop back deep on the Buffs’ three first-quarter possessions — third-and-9 in USC territory on CU’s second drive, and third-and-5 on the CU 30 — pressure followed, with the latter resulting in his lone interception.Perfection needed: The end result of all those short-yardage throws? The Buffs’ margin for error was razor thin. A false start here, errant throw or drop there, and CU just didn’t...No devices found after Lafayette Public Library evacuated due to bomb threat

The House on Saturday approved a “clean” stopgap funding bill to avert a government shutdown, sending the legislation to the Senate for consideration hours before the midnight funding deadline. The measure would keep the government funded at current spending levels for 45 days and it includes $16 billion in disaster relief — matching the figure the White House included in a supplemental request. It does not include Ukraine aid or border policy changes. The chamber cleared the stopgap bill in an overwhelmingly bipartisan 335-91 vote hours after Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) rolled out the proposal. One Democrat and 90 Republicans voted against the measure. The plan marked a stark shift in his posture when it comes to government funding. And it could spell trouble for his Speakership as conservatives heighten their threats to confiscate his gavel. At the same time, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) announced Senate Republicans would not allow the upper chamber's...House sends bipartisan bill to avert government shutdown to the Senate hours ahead of deadline

(CNN) — The House has passed a bipartisan bill to avert a government shutdown just hours ahead of a midnight deadline, setting up a Senate vote over funding the US federal government for another 45 days.House Speaker Kevin McCarthy announced the proposal Saturday morning, following weeks of in-fighting between House Republicans. The bill, which includes the natural disaster aid that the White House requested, must now be approved by the Senate before the end of the day Saturday, in order to prevent a lapse in funding. The bill does not include $6 billion in funding to aid Ukraine, a key concession that many House Republicans demanded and a blow to allies of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who lobbied Congress earlier this month for additional assistance.Asked if he is concerned that a member, including Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida, could move to oust him over this bill, McCarthy replied, &#“;If I have to risk my job for standing up for the America...San Jose Sharks get encouraging news on captain’s health

SAN JOSE — The San Jose Sharks are receiving encouraging news on injured center Logan Couture and could know as soon as Monday as to when he might be able to skate again.Couture was originally considered week-to-week with a lower-body injury and has not practiced so far in training camp. But Sharks coach David Quinn said Couture felt good again Saturday morning as he slowly works his way back from the undisclosed ailment with the season opener now less than two weeks away.“It really is a pain and comfort situation and he’s getting better and better,” Quinn said of Couture. “He’s in a really good spot. He’s told me today, ‘It’s the best I’ve felt.’”Couture, 34, was the Sharks’ second-leading scorer last season with 67 points in 82 games. Entering his 15th season with the Sharks, Couture could become just the third player in team history to play 1,000 games for the organization, as he enters this season with 927 games played for San Jose. By Michael Hill | Associated PressWest Point was accused in a federal lawsuit Tuesday of improperly using race and ethnicity as factors in admissions by the same group behind the legal challenge that resulted in the U.S. Supreme Court striking down affirmative action in college admissions.Students for Fair Admissions claims the U.S. Military Academy sets benchmarks for how many Black, Hispanic and Asian cadets there should be in each class. The lawsuit filed in New York’s Southern District claims West Point is violating the Fifth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which contains an equal-protection principle that binds the federal government.“Instead of admitting future cadets based on objective metrics and leadership potential, West Point focuses on race,” according to the complaint. “In fact, it openly publishes its racial composition ‘goals,’ and its director of admissions brags that race is wholly determinative for hundreds if not thousands of applicants.”The academy said in a ...What you need to know about new DC-area laws taking effect on Oct. 1

With the new month on Oct. 1 comes a lot of new laws for the D.C. area. Here is what you need to know about what’s going into effect and where.MarylandThe time that some Marylanders will have to wait to get their criminal records expunged will be cut roughly in half. The Redeem Act goes into effect Sunday, meaning those with misdemeanors on their records only have to wait five years — instead of 10 — to file for expungement, and those with felonies will only have to wait seven years instead of 15.And those convicted of marijuana possession can file to have those cases expunged as soon as they complete their sentence.A victim of a hate crime can now bring a civil case against the offending person or group.A person seeking help during a medical emergency for taking drugs or alcohol will not face criminal charges if the only evidence against them is them seeking help — an update to the state’s good Samaritan law.Another new drug-related policy: Hospitals will now have to te...Latest news
