Bay Area father suggests surprising place for quiet driving lessons: Roadshow Q: I taught my daughter to drive by going to a nearby cemetery. There are almost no other active cars there, and it is a good place to practice stops and starts, parking, backing up, tight turns, etc. Besides, it is highly unlikely you’re going to injure anyone, and no one complains about the noise.Norman Smith, Daly CityA: It certainly would have been a quiet place to learn to drive.Q: My husband, who is 90, has vision and balance problems. He recently renewed his driver’s license. He passed the written test, but when he was taking the visual part, he was struggling a bit, and the employee simply said it was OK and moved him along. When it came to the driving test, he also was excused from taking it.I was counting on the DMV to screen older people more closely, not less so. I would like to write a letter to the DMV, or whomever you might suggest should hear from me, and I wonder if you can give me some guidance about this.Joan SullivanA: Contact the DMV via the departmentR...

Why the independent Oakland Police Commission may be coming apart at the seams OAKLAND — Once hailed as the city’s best option for holding police accountable, the volunteer-led Oakland Police Commission has become mired in dysfunction, with its soon-to-be former chair suggesting in a new lawsuit that she has been unfairly targeted by power-hungry external forces.A tangle of accusations has driven the independent commission — which holds the power to fire and help hire the Oakland police chief — into a political divide, with messy battle lines that have been further entrenched by recent events. With the chair’s ouster, and her lawsuit, new questions surround the commission at a crucial moment when it is leading the search for final candidates to replace former Chief LeRonne Armstrong, who was fired in February. The commission’s chair, Tyfahra Milele, likely will soon be out of her job after receiving zero votes late last week from a nine-member city panel that selects commissioners and decides whether to reappoint existing one...
