(BCN) -- The stalemate continued in Oakland on Monday between the public school district and teachers who took to picket lines over wages and other items for a third day. Oakland Unified School District Board President Mike Hutchinson reiterated that district officials will only bargain over wages and working conditions. Teachers want other items included in the contract, which they call common good items. One item teachers want to see in the contract is the use of vacant school district buildings for housing for homeless students. Cinco de Mayo crowd control tactics in San Jose were ‘racist,’ fear-driven, politicians say Hutchinson some of the items in the teachers common good proposal are already reflected in the district's policies and directives. "We need this strike over," Hutchinson said at a news conference Monday afternoon. He emphasized that two narratives are at work. Union officials are saying the district is bargaining in bad faith, and district officia...Prize-winning AP team served as world’s eyes in Mariupol

NEW YORK (AP) — Instincts about the strategic significance of the Ukrainian port city of Mariupol led a team of Associated Press journalists there just as Russians were about to lay siege. It proved to be a fateful decision. For nearly three weeks last year, Mstyslav Chernov, Evgeniy Maloletka and Vasilia Stepanenko were the only journalists in Mariupol, serving as the world’s eyes and ears amid the horrors of the Russian onslaught.Together they helped expose the extent of the suffering Ukrainians endured, served as a counterweight to Russian disinformation and contributed to the opening of a humanitarian corridor out of Mariupol. They also had to elude capture by Kremlin forces that were hunting for the team.On Monday, Pulitzer Prize judges cited the work of the three Ukrainian journalists, along with Paris-based Lori Hinnant, in giving The Associated Press the prestigious award for public service.Seven AP photographers, including Maloetka, also won a breaking news Pulitzer fo...Iowa, Iowa St announce investigations into athlete gambling

The University of Iowa announced Monday that 26 athletes across five sports are suspected of wagering on sports in violation of NCAA rules, and more than 100 people have been linked to an investigation. In addition, Iowa State acknowledged that some 15 of its athletes across three sports also are suspected of violating gambling rules. The announcements came less than a week after Alabama fired its baseball coach, Brad Bohannon, following a report of suspicious bets made at an Ohio casino involving his team.NCAA rules prohibit athletes, coaches and staff from betting on amateur, collegiate and professional sports in which the NCAA conducts a championship. For example, athletes cannot bet on NFL games even if state laws would legally allow them to do so if they weren’t competing under NCAA rules. It was not known whether any of the athletes are suspected of making wagers on contests in which they participated. It is illegal in Iowa for a person under 21 to wager on sports. The Iowa Racing...2 teens charged in St. Charles Town Center mall shooting

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Kentucky racing officials have placed scratched Kentucky Derby favorite Forte on a mandatory 14-day veterinary list that may require the colt to pass a soundness test in Maryland in order to race in the Preakness. The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission announced the update on Monday, two days after its veterinarians scratched the early 3-1 choice hours ahead of the Derby during a morning soundness check because of concerns about a bruised right foot. A KHRC release cited HISA Rule 2241a in placing Forte on the list and stated that the Todd Pletcher-trained colt must perform a “satisfactory workout” for a state veterinarian and have a negative blood sample to be removed. That means Maryland veterinarians may need to be convinced that Forte is able to race in the second jewel of racing’s Triple Crown on May 20 in Baltimore. DENVER (AP) — Kevin Durant and Devin Booker needed just a little bit more offensive help, someone to take just the tiniest bit of pressure off Phoenix’s high-scoring tandem.Along came Landry Shamet, who elevated his game — five 3-pointers, 19 points — as the Suns equalized the second-round series at 2-2 against the Denver Nuggets. It’s the X-factors who are helping swing a series that moves back to the Mile High City for Game 5 on Tuesday night. Philadelphia also plays at Boston with that series tied at 2-all.Durant and Booker are simply doing what stars do — shine. Same with the Nuggets in Jamal Murray and Nikola Jokic, whose 53-point performance in a 129-124 loss Sunday was overshadowed by a sideline fracas with Suns owner Mat Ishbia (Jokic drew a $25,000 fine from the league for making improper contact).Shamet certainly stepped up for Phoenix in Game 4.
