Clint Lorance, a former Army lieutenant convicted of second-degree murder for war crimes in Afghanistan, was one beneficiary of the many pardons issued to convicted war criminals by former President Donald Trump.Lorance, who won his pardon following an advocacy campaign by conservative activists and Republican politicians, left prison in 2019 thanks to Trump. Since then, he has by all accounts moved on with his life. He has written two books: one on his experience being charged with war crimes and another offering tips for millennial conservative activists on how to ensure that the U.S. will “always lead the world in everything.”In his latest post-murder move, Lorance is working to become a lawyer. After graduating from Appalachia School of Law this May, he is now also reportedly sitting the Oklahoma bar exam and applying to practice law in the state. Join Our Newsletter Original reporting. WREXHAM, Wales (AP) — Ryan Reynolds, Rob McElhenney and Hugh Jackman watched an eight-goal thriller which had an unhappy ending for the Hollywood stars as Welsh soccer club Wrexham lost its first match back in England’s Football League on Saturday. Host Wrexham was beaten 5-3 by MK Dons at the Racecourse Ground in the opening round of matches in the fourth tier. Co-owners Reynolds and McElhenney have made Wrexham one of the most talked-about teams in Britain after buying a down-on-its-luck club for $2.5 million in 2021 and making it the subject of a fly-on-the-wall documentary — entitled “Welcome to Wrexham” — that’s charted the journey of a team run by a couple of actors learning the ropes of sports club ownership.Wrexham is playing in the Football League — the three divisions outside the Premier League — for the first time in 15 years following promotion from the National League in April.Wrexham’s profile has risen so much that the team played preseason games in the United S...Bill Madden: With Mets roster gutted, Buck Showalter a big loser at trade deadline

When the dust settled from last week’s trade deadline frenzy, the Astros, Rangers, Phillies and Rays could all consider themselves winners for having filled substantial starting rotation needs going forward, while it will take some time before the primary “sellers,” the Mets, White Sox and Cardinals, know how they fared. The pundits who love conducting this exercise every year have already declared the Reds, who failed to land a desperately needed frontline starter to bolster their chances of winning the National League Central and seemingly had the prospects to get one, as the big losers at the deadline. There are others who will say the Yankees were losers for doing next to nothing, even though they had a whole of holes to fill but not a whole lot to offer in return. But though it remained unspoken as Billy Eppler systematically blew up the 2023 Mets season and offered only muted hope about 2024, there was one notable loser to emerge in all of this and that would b...Ex-Met David Wright thrilled to be commish for NYPD-FDNY clash at Citi Field: ‘These are the real heroes’

Growing up in Norfolk, Va., David Wright knew that December meant a holiday party at the Police Department. That’s where he and his three younger brothers would sit on Santa’s lap and recount their wish lists, some of which included toy police cars and sirens. The police were a big part of Wright’s childhood because his father, Rhon, was a cop who worked in the Norfolk Police Department for 33 years and retired as an assistant chief of police. When Rhon Wright worked in the canine unit, there was always a German shepherd at home. It was a thrill for David to see his dad in uniform with his badge, but he and his brothers also got a kick out of when his dad worked undercover and would flick the headlights of his unmarked car at them after arriving at a baseball game. Wright laughs as he recalls his dad in a Tidewater Tides jacket — the Mets’ former Triple-A affiliate — in a photo with his undercover unit.“It was really cool and neat, growing up...Palestinian shooting attack in downtown Tel Aviv critically injures 1

JERUSALEM (AP) — A Palestinian gunman on Saturday opened fire in central Tel Aviv, critically wounding an Israeli police inspector before he was shot and killed by police, authorities said. The attack came a day after a settler rampage in the occupied West Bank killed one Palestinian, deepening the spiral of violence that has gripped the region for the past year and a half.Police identified the gunman as Kamel Abu Bakr, from a village near the flashpoint city of Jenin in the northern West Bank. Jenin’s refugee camp last month was the site of the largest Israeli offensive in the West Bank in nearly two decades. Twelve Palestinians, including at least eight militants, and one Israeli soldier, were killed in the fighting, which forced thousands to flee their homes and left large swaths of the camp in ruins. lsraeli police said that municipal inspectors noticed Bakr, and, believing he was acting suspiciously, approached him. They said Bakr then opened fire, wounding a 40-year-old i...Social media influencer Kai Cenat faces charges of inciting riot after thousands cause mayhem in NYC

NEW YORK (AP) — Social media influencer Kai Cenat is facing charges of inciting a riot and promoting an unlawful gathering in New York City, after the online streamer drew thousands of his followers, many of them teenagers, with promises of giving away electronics, including a new PlayStation. The event produced chaos, with dozens of people arrested — some jumping atop vehicles, hurling bottles and throwing punches.Cenat was released early Saturday from police custody after being issued a desk appearance ticket, which is issued by police to require a suspect to appear in court to answer charges. The mayhem in New York City’s Union Square Friday afternoon put further focus on the hold social media influencers have on the people who follow and fawn over them.“Our children cannot be raised by social media,” Mayor Eric Adams said Saturday during a press briefing on an unrelated crime.Police said they arrested 65 people, including 30 juveniles. MANILA, Philippines (AP) — One person died and nearly 100 had to be rescued after a ferry in the central Philippines struck floating debris at sea and took on water Saturday, police said. The accident involving the King Sto. Nino 7, which was carrying 98 people, was the third to hit the country in just over a week, police said. All those on board were rescued, except for a female passenger who suffered a heart attack and died during the scramble for safety as water gushed into the wooden-hulled vessel in sunny weather off the island town of Corcuera in Romblon province, officials said.Sea accidents are common in the Philippines because of frequent storms, poorly maintained boats, overcrowding and weak enforcement of safety regulations. After some passengers on the King Sto. Nino 7 managed to call for help, coast guard personnel and nearby ferry boats approached to rescue the 93 passengers and five crew members, who were brought to a nearby village, Corcuera police chief Capt. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — The Kansas bar where nine people were wounded by gunfire last month has permanently closed. An attorney for City Nightz told the Wichita Eagle that the club owner felt he had no choice but to close because of all the negative publicity and because police blaming the bar for the shooting.“The city has basically made it so burdensome to stay open, they can’t stay open,” attorney Charley O’Hara said. “He feels like he was singled out and blamed for a lot of things that happen all over the city and they don’t blame other people.” The city suspended City Nightz’s liquor license for 30 days after the shooting, and the year-old club never reopened.Nine people were shot July 2 and two others trampled in the chaos afterward. No one died. Police have said that the seven men and two women who were shot ranged in age from 22 to 34.Several people have been arrested. A St. Louis-area man was arrested July 3, but prosecutors later determined he fired his gun to defend him...Russia promises retaliation after Ukrainian drones hit a Russian tanker in 2nd sea attack in a day

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Moscow promised retaliation Saturday after Ukrainian drones hit a Russian tanker in the Black Sea near Crimea late Friday, the second sea attack involving drones in one day. Ukraine struck a major Russian port earlier on Friday. Moscow strongly condemned what it sees as a Ukrainian “terrorist attack” on a civilian vessel in the Kerch Strait, said Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.“There can be no justification for such barbaric actions, they will not go unanswered and their authors and perpetrators will inevitably be punished,” she wrote on the Telegram messaging app.As Kyiv’s naval capabilities grow, the Black Sea is becoming an increasingly important battleground in the war.Three weeks ago, Moscow withdrew from a key export agreement that allowed Ukraine to ship millions of tons of grain across the Black Sea for sale on world markets. In the wake of that withdrawal, Russia carried out repeated strikes on Ukrainian ports, including Odesa. An o...Latest news
