Pastor Wins Civil Rights Suit Against Trump Administration Border Surveillance A federal judge in California sided with a pastor who was targeted by U.S. authorities in a border surveillance program under former President Donald Trump. In a 44-page decision last week, Judge Todd Robinson ruled that U.S. Customs and Border Protection, or CBP, officials violated New York City pastor Kaji Dousa’s constitutional rights by adding her to a blacklist of border activists and calling on Mexican authorities to apprehend her — all despite lacking any evidence that she was involved in illegal activity. For Dousa, whose experience The Intercept chronicled in an investigation last year, the victory marked the end of an exhausting ordeal that’s spanned more than four years.“I had two real reasons for going into this — one, of course, to make sure that I’m safe to travel, but the other is that I just wanted it to help people, and from the responses that I’ve been getting, it seems like it will,” Dousa told The Intercept. “I feel like it’s a win for the helpers.”Dousa file...

Early spring cleaning for the district

Early spring cleaning for the district This content is provided by Washington Gas.Six months ago, Washington Gas teamed up with WUSA9 for their first sponsored Recycle Day. The Sept. 17 event was an overwhelming success, and they heard from many people that they had tons (literally) of items still waiting to be recycled at home.To help even more old items find a new purpose, they partnered with WUSA9 on Feb. 4 for a second sponsored Recycle Day. Their Springfield, Virginia, location was buzzing as hundreds of vehicles dropped off paper and electronics for a trip to the recycling facility instead of to a landfill. It’s a proven strategy that little changes can produce impressive results, but the combined totals of these two events have been truly staggering.*Paper: 120,000 pounds recycled (60 tons)The average ream of 8.5” x 11” copy paper contains 500 sheets and weighs about five pounds.* That’s more than 12 million sheets—enough to create a stack as high as nine Washington Monuments. It’s also enough square footage to pap...

Baltimore’s new anti-violence strategy targets drug gangs BALTIMORE (AP) — Baltimore leaders announced criminal indictments Tuesday against 33 people accused of operating a violent drug trafficking organization, saying the prosecution illustrates the continued success of an anti-violence program launched last year in one of America’s most violent cities.Baltimore’s Group Violence Reduction Strategy uses an individualized “focused deterrence” approach to target potential shooters and victims, offering them services and support where possible, in lieu of law enforcement action. But officials said some people, like the 33 defendants facing indictment, are a serious risk to public safety.Nineteen of those indicted have already been arrested, according to a news release from the state attorney general’s office. The others were still being sought Tuesday. They said the arrests should serve as a warning to other people contributing to Baltimore’s high homicide rate.“Don’t let this be you,” Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott said at a news confere...

Column: End of the WGCs with more to come, minus Match Play AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Nick Price and Rory McIlroy are footnotes in World Golf Championships history.Price hit the first shot when this series began in 1999, at La Costa in an opening match against Frankie Minoza of the Philippines. McIlroy hit the last one, a 6-foot par putt on the 17th hole at Austin Country Club to beat Scottie Scheffler.Too bad it was only for third place. That was the last of 2,022 matches over 24 years on six golf courses in two countries. Match Play started and ended the WGCs. In between were 57 others played on 13 courses. The eulogy requires an asterisk. The WGC-HSBC Champions in Shanghai has a contract through 2025. It was last played in 2019 because of the COVID-19 pandemic and the PGA Tour hasn’t said what will happen. The China Golf Association ultimately decides if it gets played, though there is a clear sense the tour would love for this one to quietly go away. But is this really the end of the WGCs?
