COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — People in Norway prepared Thursday for more flooding and destruction Thursday as rivers swollen by days of heavy rain carried large amounts of water through the country’s mountainous southeast, where vast areas were either inundated or hit by landslides. Thousands of people living near waterways were evacuated, their houses emptied and cars moved to higher ground. There had been fears that a train bridge over the Lågen River would collapse because of the large volume of water, but railway officials said Thursday that it was now stable. All traffic across the bridge was halted Monday. On Wednesday, a nearby dam partially burst after Norway’s largest river spilled over and broke through the structure. Downstream communities had been evacuated and no casualties were reported. Police said the situation at the dam was being continuously assessed.Residents of the town of Hønefossen, through which the Begna River runs, were evacuated as large amounts of water...China accuses US of trying to block its development and demands that technology curbs be repealed

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Police in Alabama on Wednesday arrested two more boaters on misdemeanor assault charges in connection with a riverside brawl that drew national attention. Major Saba Coleman of the Montgomery Police Department said the two men turned themselves in on Wednesday to be arrested. A total of three men are charged in connection with an attack on a riverboat captain and another dock worker that sparked a riverside brawl in Alabama’s capital city. One man turned himself in earlier in the week. The melee, where sides broke down along racial lines, began Saturday evening when a moored pontoon boat blocked the Harriott II riverboat from docking in its designated space along the city’s riverfront. The riverboat co-captain took another vessel to shore to attempt to move the pontoon boat and was attacked by several white people from the private boat, police said. Video showed him being punched and shoved. Crew members and others later confronted the pontoon boat part...British man among at least 5 people killed in a week of violent protests in Cape Town

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Malaysia’s government said Thursday that all Swatch products that contain lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer elements — including watches, wrappers and boxes — were banned, warning that anyone found with one could be jailed for up to three years. The ban has been published in the Federal Gazette — which makes it official — as part of a printing law that includes distribution and possession, citing concerns that such products were detrimental to the nation’s morality.Malaysia, which is predominantly Muslim, already criminalizes same-sex relationships, with punishments ranging from caning under Islamic laws to 20 years in prison for sodomy under colonial-era civil laws.In May, authorities raided Swatch stores and confiscated more than 160 watches from its Pride Collection. I have to admit, I was sad to lose Kyatchi, the Japanese restaurant that opened a second location in Lowertown St. Paul in 2017, only to close after the pandemic.Saying goodbye seems to be a common occurrence over the past few months as many restaurants deal with rising labor, real estate and food costs, but I’m happy to say hello to Erta Ale, the Ethiopian restaurant that took Kyatchi’s place. The vegetarian platter at Erta Ale, the new Ethiopian restaurant in Lowertown St. Paul. (Jess Fleming / Pioneer Press)The space has been changed slightly — the open kitchen/sushi assembly area has been drywalled in, which surprisingly makes the restaurant seem less crowded, and tables have been reconfigured slightly. There is new artwork, but also a few giant televisions, which were used to play (not too loud) music while were there. Much like Kyatchi, Erta Ale’s atmosphere is warm and inviting. The restaurant just got its beer and wine license, and they are serving several local beers on...5 things to know this Thursday, August 10

Dear Amy: I have twin nieces, both 29. We’ve always been close.Their dad (my brother) is an alcoholic known to draw unwanted attention to himself. You can imagine being teenagers and dealing with this challenge and embarrassment.I am the “Gunkle” (gay uncle) who has always been their biggest cheerleader, helped financially for their education, the person they often came to for advice, etc. We’re super close, although we have always lived in different cities and now only see each other a couple times a year.Last weekend one of my nieces (who has mentioned that I am one of the most important people in their life) attended a concert in another state. Her husband and I have our own (poor) opinions of one another. I have actively tried to repair the relationship but have not had any response from him.Anyway, to get to this concert, they literally had to drive within a mile from my home — both coming and going. She did not visit or let me know they would be nearby. The only reason I k...Latest news
