A recent scientific assessment found that the Gulf of Maine haddock stock declined unexpectedly, and that meant the catch quotas for the fish were unsustainably high, federal fishing managers said. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration added the Gulf of Maine haddock stock to its overfishing list last month. The New England Fishery Management Council, a regulatory board, has lowered catch limits of the fish in an attempt to halt the overfishing, said agency spokesperson Allison Ferreira. However, numerou...

The Homelessness Prevention Act is an overdue response to the reality that millions of California renters face each and every day.It has been three uncertain years, but as we emerge from the pandemic, it is paramount that we do not allow landlords to exploit the instability created by this unprecedented event. Contra Costa County reports 4% increase in homelessness in 2023, says last year’s count unreliable Contra Costa County’s homeless population ticked up just 4% over the past three years to around 2,300 people, according to new data showing homelessness did not surge during the pandemic despite widespread job losses. But the latest numbers from the county’s annual “point-in-time” count in January appear to contradict the results of its 2022 count, which found the number of unhoused residents soared 35% to more than 3,000 people. Davila had ordered Holmes to surrender to federal prison authorities on April 27 of this year, but that order was automatically suspended while the higher court decided whether to grant the bail request. It will be up to Davila to set a new surrender date for Holmes no...
